Starting out in the world of psychology studies, our Social Media Manager pours a glass of Thinking Juice and indulges us with her story...

What is your typical day like as Social Media Manager?

My day-to-day is a mixture of different projects – some days it’s planning new campaigns, working on strategies, creating reports, content writing, creating images with Photoshop or all of the above. We also get out of the office for photo/video shoots and events. There’s never a dull moment.

What is your social media philosophy?

Keep it simple, and keep it creative. It’s important not to overcomplicate social messaging and mechanics – the most brilliant campaigns are often the simplest, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t hours of thought behind them. It takes a lot of work to distil an idea down to its simplest form.

What’s been the most embarrassing moment in your career?

It’s got to be the awkward client greeting – are they going to go for a handshake or the cheek kiss – and is the kiss going to be a single or a double? I always go for the handshake, but I’ve had a few of those moments where you go for one thing and they go for the other. It’s always with senior corporate clients too… So very awkward.

Do you have a motto?

I’ve never really been a motto person – but if I had one, I’m certain it would somehow involve cake.

What keeps you at the top of your game?

Planning ahead. I have a diary for my daily to-do list which I keep religiously, I don’t know what I’d do without it. Outside work, it’s having busy weekends seeing friends and family – the week flies by when you have something to look forward to at the weekend.

What excites you most about the industry?

Creativity! And within social media, for me it’s conversation. There’s no other channel where you get such instant feedback and such a good feeling for how people are responding to your campaigns. Publishing something and seeing how excited people are about it is so rewarding.

What’s your favourite branded social media?

An answer that I’m sure a lot of other people would give – I love watching Innocent on social. Their recent fourth floor stapler campaign was a brilliant example of communicating brand personality without a sales message, and the response speaks for itself. Although I did take one of their posts personally – on GCSE results day in the summer, they posted ‘If your results don’t go exactly as you’d hoped, don’t worry – there’s always a career in social media to fall back on.’ Charming.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

One of the first pieces of advice I ever received: ‘However senior the person is that you’re talking to, they’re still just a person, and if you have a good point to make they’ll respect you.’ It really helped to grow my confidence in my first few meetings, and it’s something I still keep in the back of my mind now.

What kind of people do you try to employ?

In social media you need quite a varied set of skills – you have to be creative, a writer, analytical, and able to quickly manage and control difficult situations under pressure. So we look for people with those qualities and we’re very lucky to have found that in Emma, who works with me.

What’s your advice for people looking to get into the industry?

If you know what you want, be bold and go after it. Do something different to everyone else – it’ll get you noticed. And don’t give up!

What do you do when you’re not working?

I’m lucky to live right by the beach, so more often than not you’ll find me there. I love to walk along the seafront whether it’s freezing cold or the middle of summer, it’s so beautiful and I still can’t quite believe that I get to see it out of my window every day.

A cup of tea, strong and milky. Ideally with a big piece of cake.
