Introducing Joel Frear. A top designer, fashionista, die-hard Simpsons fan and budding botanist.

Indulge us with a quick bio of yourself.

I’m a designer with a strong obsession with eighties geometric patterns, drag queens, dogs, houseplants, pastel colours and wearing black. Not necessarily in that order.

What excites you most about your industry?
It’s unpredictable, our industry is always changing and every now and then you find an absolute gem that really speaks to you. I think we’re becoming more inclusive and every person within advertising and design has the chance to influence the industry. Plus, I love a design trend.

What’s your Thinking Juice?

Straight up Coca-Cola.

Do you have a favourite social media channel?

“Instagram is my favourite.
1. Because I don’t have to read loads.
2. You can see dogs, food, fashion, design and plants all in one place.
3. I find it a good place to express creativity without having to worry about the reaction, just chuck some random experiments on there and see what happens.”

Why did you want to be in our industry?
It feels nice to think that I make things look pretty and get paid for it and you get to see work you’ve done out in the real world.

What keeps you at the top of your game?
I produce a fortnightly internal emailer called ‘Pick of the Bunch’ which is a review of rebrands, trends, editorial design and fashion so that keeps me pretty emerged in the design world.

I’ve also set myself a challenge to design 365 geometric patterns throughout the year and document it on Instagram just to keep myself busy and coming up with new ideas everyday.

If you had to advertise yourself, what would your slogan be?
Keep it cute or put it on mute.

Do you have any favourite brands?
I usually prefer specific campaigns over brands but Louis Vuitton have always stood out to me for trying new things and breaking down gender stereotypes (that Jayden Smith campaign) and I also really like Sugarpill cosmetics because they have a really nice sparkly instagram.

What people or businesses inspire you most within our industry?
Morag Myerscough is my absolute design hero, she is total career goals. She has great hair, loves dogs and creates amazing work that impacts people’s lives. I’d love to be at her level at some point in my career and create my own patterns all over the world.

What do you think people know you best for?
Either eating plain bagels or wearing that denim jumpsuit to work once.
